Greetings. The City of Burlington is a model of the forces which shaped American History. Founded in 1677, the City has for almost 330 years cultivated a legacy of civilized growth as the cornerstone of West Jersey.
Every day the City grows more beautiful in restoration. There is so much for you to discover.

Woven into the history of this landmark City are the legendary achievements of our nation’s founding fathers including Ben Franklin, William Penn, Elias Boudinot, Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant, Capt. James “Don’t Give Up the Ship” Lawrence, and author James Fenimore Cooper.

Our City was once the Capital of West Jersey, and the third largest port in the New World. A wealth of “Firsts” of state and national scope originated here.

As the first recorded European settlement in New Jersey, we boast the:

County’s oldest residence,
first fire company*,
Underground Railroad sites,
the first Episcopal Church in the state,
N.J.’s first pharmacy*,
the state’s first library*,

...and so much more you will find in these pages, and on our tree-lined, sun-dappled streets.

The names on our historic buildings echo a parade of notables, from pioneering religious figures to proud founders of educational institutions, to nationally prominent politicians, including both stubborn loyalists and stalwart patriots.

The cityscape is a gem, a living lesson in architecture, thanks to the visual splendor of a heritage steadfastly preserved within our National Registry of Historic Places District.

Natural beauty abounds. Our Parks and Promenades beckon with tranquil riverfront scenery accessible to all.

Plus we offer a long history of hospitality– just ask Ben Franklin! We love to open our City to you year-round for celebrations and special events.

Ours is a past to be proud of... and it’s our present to you. Welcome to the City of Burlington.

The Honorable Dr. Jim Fazzone
Mayor, City of Burlington
